I have recently watched across the universe (see this thread) which has only reinforced the fact that I think “The Beatles” are the greatest band of all time. And I defy you to say other wise; agree with me or let me show you the error of your ways.

How in the world can you possibly compare those bands to the Beatles? Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, maybe, but even they didn't have music and lyrics as intelligent and well-played. I might have even said ELO, but Air Supply? Dare I ask, are you a Kenny G fan?

I won't disagree that you " think" The Beatles are the greatest band of all time.
In fact, The Beatles usually top the list of most online polls I've seen.
However, I can only take so much of them. I can name dozens of bands that I'd rather
listen to. I grew up loving the bands Tim mentioned and eventually got into the harder
metal sound. I'll take Bolt Thrower or Morbid Angel over The Beatles any day.

Beatles as unique as they ever will come. There are no others like them nor ever will the same way as M.J. and Elvis Presley.
So, stop comparing them to everything that came after they laid foundation and told others what music is all about

I have to agree. For rock music I like the Beatles a lot, but after about 20 to 30 mins of them, I get a headache.
And for the record, it's a narrow section of The Beatles that's good. Love Me Do is the theme song to Sesame Street - can't listen to it. It's only the period around when they were heavy into LSD that they made bona fide good music.

Woohoo the Beatles! I think they were probably the greatest ever rock band, whatever anyone else says! They were of course Brits like me
They lead a period of radical change and inspired a generation by their music - no-one can take that away. Whether all the changes they helped inspire (during the 60s etc.) were a good thing is debatable but their music is simply ledge.

I like the way the Beatles evolved from a teen gear fab rock band (the cute moptops) into music that even musicologists can appreciate (compare "With The Beatles" to "Revolver"). No one had done that before on such a scale. And given the state of today's ka-ching music industry no one probably ever will again. At least not in the same way. The list of firsts that many give them credit for is long and lumuinous. It also extends into the studio where George Martin helped them create effects such as flange, phaser, new concepts in tape cutting, etc. Their influence on 20th century music will remain beyond question. But that doesn't mean they will forever remain popular or even highly listened to. Pop culture is a dynamic beast that welcomes the new, no matter how awful, and eschews the old. But when 20th century music comes up years from now the influence of the Beatles will likely lead the conversation.

That's because corporations have colonized the music industry. It's no longer about making people happy or making them get up and dance - it's about making a million.

I loved Across The Universe. Did anyone else think the male leads voice was awfully similar to the one from Moulin Rouge? Maybe it was just the accent.

There is still good bands out there you just have to know where to look, but nothing like the Beatles. They are the only band to my knowledge that changed their music with the times and still were number one.

I think, as with most innovators before them, the real legacy of the Beatles is that they managed to get pop music accepted as "art". This is no small achievement. Think about most of the blockbuster singles these days. They might be catchy, but few would describe them as truly artful (I'm generalizing a little bit here). The Beatles, on the other hand, managed to galvanize an entire generation. Even a highbrow like Susan Sontag once said it was the Beatles that compelled her to leave her husband and do what the hell she wanted to do.
After the Beatles, real art became much less marketable, and pop stars became media constructs rather than visionaries. You might argue they "ruined" the music industry in so far as it is an industry (Elvis needs to take some blame, too). But, whatever the value of their music -- and I think it does have a great deal of value -- they had an enormous hand in inventing what we now call middlebrow pop culture. Even people who hate the Beatles usually like at least one of their songs -- or failing that, what they stood for.
