I enjoy reading through the New Member Intros. It gives me an idea what the new victim member is all about. Some humbly acknowledge they are here to learn while others promise to condescend from dizzy heights to share their vast knowledge of all things geeky with us.
For those who have been posting to WMT for a while, would your description of yourself be different today compared to your original introduction?
Mine would be something like: "Hi, I'm an idiot. Help!"

Hmm
Here's one of my first posts:

I must confess, that I also have "lurked". I have long been searching for a talk for webmasters... now I've found it!
|
Doesn't quite make sense
How would I describe myself? - 16 years old
- Tall, dark and handsome (well we can dream
)
- Afro hair style!
- Computer geek, getting increasingly geekier
- Christian (Baptist to be precise)
- Mac fan, who despises Windows

- Intellectual sort I guess - I do fairly well at college and school
- Politically-minded person - I often find it frustrating when people don't want to express their own opinion or in fact don't have any opinion about politics.
- I laugh at things that people don't always think are funny - I have a fairly unique sense of humour

I don't want to hog this thread by talking all about myself though!

I know, didn't think Dan was 16 did ya?
Hold on while I go see what I said about myself way back when............
http://www.webmaster-talk.com/new-member-introductions/26958-hi-everyone.html
Hmmm, still the mom & wife, family historian, but now I have completely redone the church website and at least 50 others. Since that post I've changed jobs 4-5 times, all because that company close - don't bother with the link it's been down for at least 2 years.
I think I would say I have more experience & less free time now than I did then. Is that what happens when you get older, you cram more into your life, or is it just me?

I never did post in the introduction forum. When I joined this forum I only new graphic design and nothing about coding or web design, I could not even tell you what a <tag> was. I was talking with one of my friends one day and I think I said something like “I think it would fun to make a website.” Well one year later and through the toils of many frustrating nights and with the much needed help and critique of fellow WMT members, I am doing several freelance jobs of “making websites” for people, but I am still learning new stuff. Sometimes when I need a good laugh I will go back and look at my first site, Dan saw it.
Next year PHP and MySQL
BTW – Kandi, that’s interesting that you do your churches site, That’s where my business is concentrated, would you mind me looking at the church site, I like to look at different church sites and maybe get ideas and stuff and I just think it would be interesting.

I don't think I ever described myself in another thread other than just little bits of information here and there. So here it goes:
As you can see my name is Matt, but a lot of people call me Tinsley. I currently live in orange county CA, for anyone who has ever seen The OC, Laguna Beach, or The Hills on TV that's it. I moved down here when I went to college three years ago, which makes me a junior this year but I plan to be a 5th year so I usually just say I'm a 3rd year so in two years from now I can avoid saying I'm a super senior. I'm a Computer Science major and a Philosophy minor.
Right now I'm taking a quarter off of college to get started paying off loans and hopefully get a chance to do some real work in the industry ( I can code in PHP, Java, and C++ for anyone that's hiring ).
Even though I'm not in school for the next three months I plan to keep pretty busy, I'm working full time as a caterer, which I guess means I'm working 60 hours a week, because even when I was part time for the last three years I still got 40. I'm also working on a few projects, one of which is my personal blog which I intend to build from scratch (framework and all) just to keep my programming skills sharp while I'm not in school, and also to force myself to work on design as well as programming considering that has never been my strong suit.

First year. Over here in the UK, high school ends at 16 and then you go off to college/sixth form to do A levels or the equivalent for 2 years. Then it's university sometime after that. Do Americans call university "college" or something? (I seem to remember being told something like that sometime)

University and College are the same thing to Americans.
Education for us is something like this.
Around age 5 you start Kindergarten, These are usually half days
Then it's grades 1 through 5 in an "elementry school"
6 to 8 is Junior High
9 to 12 is Highschool
At this point your "forced" schooling is pretty much done. About 95% of Americans get to this point or an equivalant
Then it's off to college, with a standard 4 year program earning you a BA or BS
Then a small % continue on to post grad work, usually at the same colleges.
Many people elect to go to small community colleges for a year or 2 before transfering to a major university, however this is very much optional, and the work is all going towards that same 4 year degree.

Hmm sounds a bit complicated.....
In our country - you go to primary from 5 (or some aged 4), then leave at 11 to go to high school until 16 at which point compulsory education ends. Most however go on to college until 18 and some then go on to university for several years to do a degree. Our government are thinking about raising the age of compulsory education from 16 to 18.
Anyway, I think we're getting a bit off topic here

I never introduced myself in the intro forum either. I'm 35, have been married 8 years, have two stepsons, 20 and 19.
I grew up mostly in Germany because my dad was in the Air Force. While we were there, we walked about the distance from New York to LA all over Germany on Volksmarches, so we saw the real Germany and not the tourist traps. I climbed the Alpspitze (2nd highest mountain in Germany) when I was fifteen. Naturally, as a guest in a foreign country I learned German.
I'm a lifelong artist, taught myself graphic design by just buying and using the Adobe suite, though I neither owned nor wanted to own a computer until eight years ago. Got a web design certificate two years ago hoping it would make me more marketable in graphics; sadly, though I've been able to do freelance work, in the Raleigh area you can't buy a graphics job without a degree. My college career was abruptly stopped in my mid twenties when, like many artists and entertainers, I discovered I'm bipolar. Though that's been well under control for years, it's hard to get back into school once out, but I'm looking to finish up the degree.
I was a custom cabinet maker until the shop got bought out, which of course came with layoffs; now I'm a security guard, doing freelance web and graphic work on the side. Got a la-BOHR-atory in the back which I dedicate to this or that sculpture, invention, musical interlude (I write songs) or other diabolical plot, such as the evil smiley thing here.
