My sister is going to college soon and we are going to get her a laptop. I get discounts through HP but Dells are solid performers as well as the new Ibook.
I am leaning towards the ibook for her (and maybe one for me) but I'd like to get some thoughts.
I haven't made the jump to Mac yet, but will one day. I just bought a Gateway Turion 64 bit for my portable computing and have been very pleased. Bought my wife a Dell notebook a year and a half ago and it's been a good machine. We have 4 desktops at home...brandnew Dell P-D for the wife and a custom job for me...water cooling, the works lol.

Moving from a PC to a MAC is kinda scary at first but you eventually get it. There are no virus issues (at least not like on a PC) and the accessories are rather nice and unique. I currently use a PC and there's really no need right now to get another machine.

There are viruses, but there aren't as many of them. Easier for virus makers to earn money creating viruses for Windows because it earns them more money. Bigger userbase for Windows.
I haven't had first-hand experience with a Mac yet but I plan on getting one soon. Those iBooks look so sleek. I have about 5 PCs (1 laptop) and if people say that a Mac is a lot better, I'm willing to give it a try.
I still need a bit of convincing myself before I move to a mac - which I sort of want to do. My biggest holdback is the value for the hardware. If someone can convince me of that, I'm in.
Yeah, they're okay once or twice... but my personal opinion is that aftr a few times, they get a little lame. But I still love Apple, even if only for their IPod. Pure genious.

I would personally recommend Microsoft over Apple and HP over Dell but, of course, those are just my opinions. Obviously, Apple's have a lot of appealing things going for them that put them in a different league than Microsoft but I personally prefer the compatibility of Windows.
I like Apple. No daily viruses. No daily SpyWare. No weekly security updates. Free from Bill Gates.
For the last 3 years, OS X had had more security flaws than WinXP (according to PC Magazine, I think an issue from March), just Macs aren't as popular so they don't get exploited like crazy.
I think we are all in denial when we say Bill Gates sucks (I used to say this daily), but where would we be without him? I absolutely hate one button mice!!!!
