I was wondering, I don't want to put a portal / main page right now, I just want to put the forum up and running but I don't want to put it directly in the root (still following?).

So I thought "Let's make a .htaccess that will redirect everything in the /forum" and it works perfectly.

My questions are: Will this affect the SEO? Does Google & co. ignore my site because of the redirect? Should I put a simple page, in place of the redirect, that says "Click here to access the forums" ? (Usually, landing pages like that are bad, I know).

In my opinion, I would not put up a splash page. I am not entirely sure about the effects that it will have on SEO. I would assume that if its a header redirect, they would follow it to the forums. I never thought of it actually, I should go do some research...

I never used this method before, that's why I'm asking. If people have experienced that in the past, could be helpful (at least to me)

No, it doesn't affect SEO much. I have a forum that's pointed to /forums and it has over 18,000 pages indexed in Google.
