Canon's are definately the way to go for mainstream photographers. They are decently price and their performance is outstanding. I have tha A90, and I haven't had any malfunctions or complaints about it. (My uncle also has an A90, and my cousin has an A75.)
One thing to look for when buying cameras is to make sure they take AA batteries and not battery packs. The drawbacks of having a battery pack is that if you want to buy another one, it will cost you quite a bit more than buying high performance (2000 mAh+) rechargeables. Otherwise you are stuck with one, and when it dies, you can't take any photos until you recharge.
