You could get an ibook/powerbook in that range, but they're not good for gaming, generally. Check Cnet. They're bound to have some good reviews for stuff in your price range.

Ah, ok. I thought you wanted to trade your coding skills for a laptop.

Would you like a dell? Could you tell me what kind of specs you want? I might be able to hook you up.

Whatever you decide to get, stay away from any HP laptops. They may be good starting out but over a period of 1-2 years, they will start overheating terribly. I know because I have one

Where do you live? I live in Canada and MDG gives some pretty good deals on laptops.

I would definitely go buy a Dell, or toshiba Centrino Duo laptop . It's what I'm using it it is so fast, it's amazing. Even after installing tons of software, it's still going at a good speed.

Thank you,
Donny

Go with a Dell, or a Apple Powerbook.

I know this is out of your price range, but its deffinetly worth a look :

I was considering of buying that, but I got a new desktop instead.

Ok Let's be reasonable people. The best you can get on the market is IBM/Lenovo. Simply because of keyboard. I owned and still own 3 IBM laptops
R40, R40e and now R50 and this is some working maschine. It is the best money can buy. Of course some models don't come packed with all those high-tech gadgets but hey that means there is one less thing that can break down.

Look at the new Z series .... this is my next one when I break R50

It is interesting what my earlier R40 that is now in use with my lady went through. From falling on the floor couple of times, was hit by yogurt hehe and wine couple of times also.

ok so this is kind of funny. Reading this thread there is someone who says stay away from HP because his is getting hot now after a couple of years. There is no mention of how he treats his HP, and he would probably say he does not do anything bad to it etc. but that is not a reason to avoid HP, I personally don't like HP but that is just me, so what should you get for $1500 or so? I am a personal fan of Dell. I was in the surplus business for a long time and sold many many Dell machines. If they are treated right then you will have no problems. If something does break after warranty getting a replacement part on eBay is so easy and cheap. However if you find a HP that you like you probably will have a good experience with it. Find something that has enough ram and cpu power and get that machine, do not make this a month long ordeal just buy a stupid laptop already?
have you got your laptop yet? what are you waiting for?

I have a Sony Vaio and looking back I'd probably have bought the same laptop again

Perfect and extremely portable.
