I was reading one of the lengthy articles on Sitepoint the other day, and it was about starting up your own business at home, whether it be online or not. One of the points wasto get a couple of people who are experienced in the niche or in the market you are about to enter and have them at your side to help you get through the market and get started.

Just wondering, do you guys have any one like this? Feel free to share any experiences that you have

Not a single one. Many. I've had a number of people I've looked up to, both online and off. One of the most important learning experiences I had, when I finished up with grad school I worked for several small companies, starting out as bookkeeper and working up to CFO level. My purpose was to learn from several entrepreneurs in live situations, and where better to learn than being in control of their accounting systems.

I would agree that I don't look up to one single person as a mentor but I do try and learn from all of the top people in their respective fields. Read their books, read their blogs and whatnot.

I think in a way, these types of Forums can be a "Mentor", but I have yet to get that one on one time that a Mentor really provides.

Hmmm, that gives me an idea.... Maybe we should start a Mentoring website similiar to dating websites. :-) Go ahead and use the idea. I've got more on my plate than I know what to do with. Just let me know when it's up and running so I can get first shot at the SEO mentors. :-)

The only "mentor" I have had was a friend who helped teach me my first programming language. He was a huge help.

Definately had a few. One in particular was my grandfather. He tought me alot about Business and Relations in dealing with Business. In PHP I would say I have had a few... Designing - a few. Mentors are everywhere... some just don't get the credit they deserve

Especially since I am a designer, there are a few other designers I have always looked up to.

I have many, depending upon the field or interest. Right now I am reading everything I can from Thomas L. Friedman.
