I have a couple of questions about vB.

1) I know it's not required to start a community but I was thinking of investing a $85 on a Leased license, do I make a mistake?

Is there a good amount of free templates and free useful mods out there? (I want something like the Inline Ads for phpBB if anyone knows what I'm talikng about, does that exists?)

I know the leased license is only for a year but I figured that, if I don't make enough during that time to pay for another year of vB, it's a waste of money, am I wrong?

I used a leased license for 3 years and purchased the license later. I was unsure if the software would hold up for my site. I think it is a good option for anyone who is unsure or who doesn't want to input the money upfront. In the long run it is more expensive. Next year you will have to renew it again and at this point, you have paid enough for purchase. But I did it and know others do it too.

There are several websites with free hacks/customizations for the vb. Try vb.org as a place to start. I'm unsure what inline ads for phpbb is all about but I'm sure you can find it. Templates abound at the various vb fans websites as well.

I took a peek at vb.org a few hours ago and it, indeed, seems a good referrence, just wasen't sure if it was worth it

vB probably has one of the best community online for hacks and modifications. In my opinion, vB for your forum is definitely not a waste of money. It's worth it due to the fact that it's powerful software, easy to customize to your liking, and it has a great community along with it.

Well, I'm pretty much convinced of the utility of vB.

I just have to decide if I invest or not.

I don't know if there are too many free vB skins out there but I do know there are some. As for modifications the vB community has tons, you can get almost any mod you need and making one should'nt be too hard either.

What I would say is to buy the license. Buying a leased license will become really expensive for you in the long run because if you do plan on continuing your site you will either continue the lease or buy an owned license at the end which means you have ended up paying more than if you just started out buying an owned license.

vBulletin's own forum has a ton of skins but if you want high-quality ones like EF's then you can invest in one and it'll totally be worth the price. If your forum flops, you'll always be able to sell it and recoup your money back.

I can resell and half-used license? I didn't knew that. That's quite interesting...
How does it work? To buy or sell one, I mean.

For inline ads, I'm assuming you mean something like ads after the first post, right? If so, you can find something that'll do that here

As for free skins, vb.org is the best place I know to get them...you'll find more free skins there than anywhere else.

Not necessarily...I'm not convinced that every forum needs a custom skin - it just depends on who is visiting the forum...and I also wouldn't bank on selling the skin and getting what you paid for...having a custom skin made for you is going to be expensive...anywhere from $250 all the way up to $1,000+....and you're not going to get that much from reselling it either, since it is no longer custom to the buyer.
