Joel Comm?

First, let me say that I am not bashing Joel at all. I'm just pointing something out that struck me as odd. Maybe someone here can help me understand what I am about to question. BUT, before I question it I want to say that it is my belief that under no terms whatsoever should one ever try to pull the wool over someone eyes and mislead them, or lie to someone for whatever reason. BUT . . . on his website he states, "Joel Comm is an Internet entrepreneur who has been online for over 20 years." That would take us back to 1986 or earlier (over 20 years). BUT it wasn't until " 1986, the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) initiated the development of the NSFNET which, today, provides a major backbone communication service for the Internet." AND it wasn't until 1991 that " World-Wide Web (WWW) released by CERN; Tim Berners-Lee developer. First Web server is nxoc01.cern.ch, launched in Nov 1990 and later renamed info.cern.ch." Someone prove me wrong. Otherwise, I am not only going to think highly of this guy for his marketing skills, but his working with AL Gore to create the Internet. To think he went from working on the backbone of the Internet we know today to creating Link Sizzler, wow.
PLEASE understand that I respect him for his ability to make some serious cash from the Internet, but what I don't like is to be lied to, or mislead. Again, please help me understand what he did over 20 years ago on the Internet.
Greg

20 years? That must be a typo on Joel Comm's website. I'm going to bump this topic so Joel Comm or anyone else can reply to this.

Maybe he worked for NASA and had access to the internet long before everyone else :ninja:

I respect all that Joel does, his skills are amazing! I honestly hope that this is just a typo. I pointed it out for the fact that some may not think as highly of him as I do and try to destroy his reputation over a slip of the fingers.

I was "online" before there was a WWW. I subscribed to Compu$erve. I surfed Gopher from my university computer. I logged onto many a local BBS, back in the day. Can't lay claim to 20 years, personally, but more than 15.

I surfed through Gopher from my University as well, way back in 1990. However that is no where near "over 20 years."

Were you paid to type that? :tooth: J/k. Or am I? What type of reputation does he have?

LOL Funny you say that. I just cancelled CompuServe service that someone had tossed onto my uncles debit card without him noticing over 2 years ago...

I doubt Joel makes typos, it's just a little truth stretching to sensationalize his marketing.
Which he does alot of....

Anyone that started content websites over ten years ago would do well with AdSense.

I'm going to close out this thread, as I'm afraid it's lowering the general intelligence level of this forum. I realize many people are too young to remember 20 years back, but it's simple enough to look up in Wikipedia or whatever. Heck, even AOL goes back further than 20 years, perhaps he was on AOL back in the 80s, but really who cares? How does debating whether Joel Comm was "online" in 1986 help you become an earner?

My bio doesn't say I have been on the "Internet" for 20 years. It says I have been "online" for 20 years.
In 1980, I was using dial-up at 300 baud to call local bulletin board services. (Anyone else remember these?)
I was on Prodigy, Compuserve, Delphi and GEnie in the beginning. And I was online with AOL when it was version 1.0.
I guess that actually puts me closer to 26 years online. But who's counting?
;-)
