Then install Trillian (http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/) to have all accounts in one application...

I don't think Yahoo! is as popular. MSN is the biggie that is a must nowadays. Skype and AIM will help. ICQ, I haven't seen too many people use as lots of numbers aren't too easy to memorize.

Skype is definately a must.

As for the softwares that supports multiple messengers, there's Jabber too (jabber.org I think). I've used it in the past, it's really good.

I use msn and google talk. I guess in europe almost no one uses yahoo or aim anyway.
