I have a few article sites that implement a comment system similar to EHow's 'Tips' where users can add useful information relating to the article. When a user submits a 'tip', they are required to enter their email address.
Over the last week I've tried something new - Whenever I approve a well-thought out addition (100% moderated), I send a quick one sentence email to the submitter along the lines of:

Hi NameYouEnteredWhenYouSubmitted,
I just wanted to personally thank you for taking the time to submit such a helpful and well thought-out tip to the site.
Thank you!

Guess what? It's been less than a week and half of the people I've sent this email to have come back and submitted more... much more. One of them has submitted three entire articles in the past two days.. all for the cost of one appreciative email.
Never underestimate the motivational value of recognition. (Now it's time to automate this  )
