"Email becomes the new snail mail"

The above article states that "no one is predicting the death of email. Besides its usefulness in formal correspondence, it also offers the ability to send something from "one to many," and "For many young people, IM'ing is about choosing the best communication tool for the situation"

How will this weigh into the way you do business online? Will it have an effect or will you need to look at ways to adapt to this trend?

Email will lose out for communicating with friends and what not, but will not lose out inside business or b2b. IMO

I rarely use email for friend/family talk, I mainly use it for notifications (like forum subsciptions, paypal payments etc). And with Gmail's massive space I often use it to store work that I'll be needing on a different PC.

Like the person who wrote that article; if you want to get hold of me then IM, phone or text me.

In businesses email does not seem to have the same level of impact as a personal message does. That's just my opinion but I tend not to do many business dealings through email anymore.

E-mail is still a significant component in non-formal correspondence, such as communicating with family and/or friends overseas. Instant Messaging, likewise, has been growing in popularity significantly since its establishment. These days, the basis of this article is evident, as Internet ventures offer instantaneous assistance via such software’s to their clientele. You can find numerous hosts across the web promoting their MSN/AIM/ICQ accounts to provide help. In any case, despite the enlargement in Instant Messengers’ popularity, e-mail will always remain a significant tool in communicating online.

I believe email is here to stay simply because of its reliability. You do not have to wait for someone to be online to send the message, it can be formal or informal, and there are so many email accounts out there being active that it's hard to see the decline of it.

Email is best for business in my opinion. For personal/family, I use IM and MySpace messaging.

E-mail is becoming more and more dirty every day. Instant messenger is much better concept of communication than e-mail. I expect, in few years, that IM will have 90% of "manual" vary conversation (between friends, B2B), but email will still have its share, mostly in automated communication. I mean, what do you think, how much time would need forum admin to confirm every member registration live by im?

It depends who you ask. You will get a different answer from a professional entrepreneur that's say 30-40 than you would from someone that's an 18 year-old webmaster.

Like anything, usefulness depends on your target market and objective.

Yeah, I use e-mail for business and Instant Message for almost everything else.
