I know how it feels to be attacked by viruses. I wiped out my computer back in January because of viruses and SP2 install. I was dumb and did not back up anything. Big mistake, I lost everyfile I ever made. In retorspect I am glad I wiped it out because I had keyloggers on there and luckily I wasn't to into logging into things then except Counter Strike which was stolen but I recovered it. I am glad your files were backed up and I tend to stay weary of download sites because of trojans. One day, maybe windows will actually be impervious to attacks (unlikely). You did that smarth thing of backing up and reformatting.
But I don't use antivirus/spyware removal softwares. Those sucks!!!
Spysweeper is amazing. It gets the job done for me and doesn't use that much memory either. I would go with it, you won't have to worry about websites transmitting Trojans to your computer anymore.

Virus and trojans (and other codes) can be simply prevented by having an updated antivirus and not downloading files from any untrusted sites or persons. Well, I can't say its 100% protection since everyday a new moron creates new virus that could infect you before the update comes but prevention is better than cure.
