I've always wanted a digital camera but I've never had one so I know nothing about them. I have no idea how many megapixels = a good camera, I know nothing about flash, I haven't taken a picture in about 6 years (with the exception of school/id pics). Basically I'm a digital camera newb.

So please recommend me a good camera. I actually don't really want one to take pictures of myself, I really like photography, landscapes, pictures of bands, etc.

Basically what I'm looking for is something clear and full of color. Not too expensive though. Thanks for the help in advance.

Looks good but the memory is alittle too small. Specially if I go on vacation I won't be able to transfer the pics to the computer so I can take more.

I strongly advise a Canon Powershot.

Also it's not about MP, there are many factors which determine a good camera (I'vw have a 5.2MP which was worse than two 1.3MP cameras made 2-3 years before it.

Look at the optical zoom (most cameras have around 3x..should be enough for normal photography)...don't even bother about digital zoom..

MPs are not that important unless you plan to print posters from your photos..

A 4.0 MP should be more than sufficient...

If you plan on taking videos...can try look for one which take videos with sound too...most cams are able to do that nowadays...

And about memory...you can get 1 or 2 gig memory cards...

6 MP is about the norm, though everything over 3.5 is good enough. For memory, just buy memory sticks, If you don't use your camera much then you shouldn't need much as you can upload the pictures off your camera every now and then.

You can get memory cheap @ E-Bay.
I have found when on foreign vacations, that if I go to the hotel at nite,
scan the day's pix and delete all the duplicates, etc
that I can come home with mostly good stuff, and I have not used up a large amount of memory.
By all means, go digital... It's FUN.

I posted this on my forum and it was suggested that I speak to the manager of a store, and try to get something cheap that was either returned or refurbished. Would you recommend that?

They say you can get quality for cheap, it may have a scratch though.

For mountain and landscape picture, you better get at least 4.0 pixel camera for 3" x 5" or 4" x 6" picture. For larger size, you better get 5.0 pixel or better camera.

I definately recommend Canon aswell - the range is called iXUS in Australia, I think it's PowerShot in the US?

If it's just for candids - you won't need anything above 4MP, with that you'll get a great 8x10 if needed.
Go for the OPTICAL zoom, not digital.
Buy an extra battery - try to get a camera that uses lithium batteries instead of AA's.
Buy the largest memory card you can afford.

I'm a Canon dSLR user - I have 2 lol. I've used Sony aswell and they're good too.

If they can guarantee you that it will work X month/years then I wouldn't say no to it. That's just me though! Most cameras will get scratched within time.

More megapixels doesn't mean better camera Like I said, if it's just for candids and you're not printing above 8x10 - a 4 megapixel is more than fine. I used to print out great shots with my Sony 3MP years ago

I reccomend Fujifilm digital cameras. We have two. One is a 5MP and the other is a higher end 9MP. They both work real well the pictures color and calrity is amazing and the processing chips in them are good so it doesn't take very long to take a picture.

I have a Canon PowerShot A95 camera. It has worked great for me ever since the day I got it. I highly reccomend it, although I'm pretty sure newer models have already replaced this one.

If you are considering purchasing a digital camera, I suggest these 2 models:

Canon Powershot A700
Canon IXUS 800IS (or you can opt for IXUS65)

Recommend the rechargeable battery for digital camera. It outlasts bunny or copper. Last summer, I use four of them with my Canon PowerShot S2 to take about 150 pictures. Compare to original batteries, it will take about 50 shots. Waste my money on original batteries. :taz:
