Hahaha, isn't that unfortunate? What happened to cause that? Did you go from one tax bracket to the next higher one? Does UK have a progressive tax structure, I'm not familiar with it.

That's not how it works.

Let's say you earn 60k/yr.

The first bracket (say it's at 30k/yr and 20%) will be taxed 6000.

The second bracket (say it's at 50k/yr and 30%) will be taxed 6000 aswell.

Only the money that is in that bracket gets taxed.

Or you get a paltry 3% payrise, which in theory keeps you up to date with the rise in living expenses, but you find your council tax went up by 12%, everything else has gone up and in reality you're earning less than before!

Can't you tell your employer to give you a good increase (so you get more out) or to keep it. PeterLancs - maybe you can ask for a reduction? That should make your boss happy!

Hey, maybe you can ask your boss to demote you. Less pay more money!
But the truth is never be afraid to take more money. You will never fall into a higher tax bracket. You would have to be making so much money for something like that to happen and if you were making that much money your boss wouldn't be offering a measly 10 dollars a week, (which is about 2 bucks a day, or 25 cents an hour.) Anyway, you're tax return will be larger, so smile..... It's all good.
