Big Decision?!- Highschool Sports

It's my senior year, it actually starts tomorrow . Anyway, I'm the captain of my varsity basketball team. For some reason I want to play football, and I havent played since 7th or 8th grade. They are going to put me at wide reciever. My delimna is getting hurt for basketball season, but if I don't play football this year, I'll never play again. I have no intentions of playing football in college as I do in basketball. I know I'd be good at wide reciever, because I'm 6'1 and have great verticle because I can dunk with almost ease, and I'm pretty quick. If I dont play football, I am going to invest in ww.weightvest.com/Basketball.html, and do what I was doing all summer and lift weights and practice.
I need to make a decision quick, as it will be to late for me to join the football team by monday I believe.
Anyone have a similar problem?

Football is the best team sport ever! But seriously, I would say you should get out there and play football if you really love it. There is a good chance you'll never put pads on again once you leave high school. That's a terrible feeling, but if you play this year you'll have amazing memories to look back on.
I say go for it!

Play football, sure there is a chance you could get hurt but you could also get hurt doing a lot of other things before basketball season starts.

If you have a real scholarship opportunity for basketball then I think you'd be a fool to risk getting injured in football to mess that up. A buddy of mine lost his football scholarship (full ride) his freshman year of college because he decided to play intramural basketball, and wound up smashing his knee.

I wouldn't risk it, but if you really really want to do it, then go for it.

Cross country runners are insane. I think football is more demanding physically, but as far as endurance goes, you can't beat a x-country runner. They are crazy. I went running with this girl from my high school's cross country team two years ago. Every time we did short distance stuff, I'd wear her out and outrun her. When we started doing 4-5 miles, though, I was absolutely dead and she was absolutely fine.
I think it was all a function of speed over distance. I liked to run fast to get to my destination point. She went slower and steadier to get farther in the long run.

Who says you can never play it again?
You can play in college as a walk on or hell just play on weekends with friends or join some local league.

I'm not saying he can never play again, but walking on in college is tough, and playing on the weekends with friends just isn't the same without pads.

Play. I know exactly what you mean by never play again. It has nothing to do with playing on the weekends with friends. Play. It is a one shot deal -
pass it up and oh boy enjoy your friends on the weekend! Oooh!
I understand.

I never ran long distance in high school or college. But for about 3 years at about 35 - 38 years old. I did. It was great. And probably helped save my
cranky old life. It really builds up the heart and the endurance is incredible.
Never ran more than 18 miles, often ran 8-10 miles. It was a great experience.
It is not easy. LIfe interferred and I returned to truck driving.
Play football you'll miss the experience if you dont. I understand that and that is why I'll always appreciate my effort at long-distance running for 3 years.

It takes FAR more skill to be a good runner than a good football player. Any big fat dude can do ok at football. Competitive running requies endurance that a very small percentage of people are born with.

I understand. I gotta say play. You'll never know unless you do it and you'll ask yourself forever what would have happened. Did you get cut? Make it? Do well?
If you dont try this you'll be in your fifities asking those silly questions and laughing at yourself. Play. Have fun!

ah, so true, we are crazy. About that speed over distance - that's bogus. You don't win cross country races (or come in the top 20-30% even) if you can't run a 3.1 miles in ~17mins.

Have you ever played football competitively? I don't think so. Endurance is something that can build up. I'm not going to get into a fight over which is a better sport (because that will never be decided), but I firmly believe that football is grueling.
If you'd ever gone through college two-a-days or an entire 15 week high school season where you play every down of every game, you'd understand, but I suspect you have not.
Most football players are not fat. Most good linemen are not fat. Sure, fat guys can do ok, but they'll get their butts kicked by the strong speedy guys. Trust me, I know.
