i can't get the internet to work on a computer that I have. I unplug the ethernet from this comp and plug it onto the the comp and it doesn't work. I tried going to network connections to create a new connection, but noting happens either. There arn't any icons in the Network Connections menu either so I think it has something to do with setting one up. On this comp, I have Local Area Connection, but on this other comp there is nothing.

i don't think this comp even detects the ethernet port since I can't see it uder the computer hardware list. help :'(

Has the computer been on the internet before (I mean through that connection, did it just suddenly not work?)
What OS is installed?
Is your ethernet on-board or a PCI card?
If on-board, then what is your motherboard?
If PCI card, then look on the card for the manufactor (download drivers from site)?
Is this the first time you used the card? in that computer?
If you just put the card in, try switching it's PCI slot to a different one.

If you can answer some of those, then I can help

okay, I got the ethernet card to show up on hardware, but it still doesn't work. I get the "limited or no connectivity" error.

-ethernet is onboard.
-this computer was bought used.
-dunno if the ethernet on the comp was new or used. most likely used.

someone said it could be just that it's not assinging an ip to my comp. if that's the case, how do I assign one to it? Now that I think of it. My sister couldn't get her laptop to work with the internet either. Maybe my isp only allows 1 ip?

if u can see the connection on the system tray, click it and click repair, that usually works for me when i get limited or no connection, or u can get a new internet card for the computer, since its used, it can be damaged and not work

If you've been connected previously, then I would suggest the following.

Unplug your modem and router for 30 seconds then plug them back in and restart your computer. Or hit the reset on the modem..

Depending on your ISP you may need to tell them the new IP#

When posting questions like yours, it's best to give as much info as possible..especially the operating system.

These are excellent questions to ask yourself when troubleshooting a broken internet connection.
