I'm not totally sure but for example..
del.icio.us just registered the domain icio.us and made a del subdomain that redirected to their index page?

so registrars will let you get a period in a domain? what other characters can you have in a domain?

No, I don't think so. You can get whateverdomain.tdl (.com, .net, .co.uk, .ws, et cetera) and you can add anythingyouwant.whateverdomain.tdl.

The first bit, the subdomain, can be whatever you want on your bass domain.

you can only have a period in the domain if its a subdomain

All domains can have sub domains

examples:
mail.yahoo.com
videos.google.com and images.google.com

All del.icio.us did was register icio.us and added the subdomain del

you could register licio.us and add the subdomain de to get something close like de.licio.us

All you have to do is use you imagination to make a word up that is compatable with a TLD(.com, .us, .ca, .de, .org, .net)

basically a subdomain name is like a folder, but set it up differently on your server

you could choose to do yourdomain.com/folder or folder.yourdomain.com, these are common practices that all domain owners use
