There are so many known and unknown good anime, BP.
A lot revolves around myths from Japan and / or "mechas" (robots). The Pokemon like anime are few (well, I'm sure there's plenty of them but I don't know any).
If you like futuristic stuff that dosen't revolve around swords and magic but more like sci-fi, try Ghost in the Shell (the matrix has been loosely based on the concept of GitS, by the way). That's a realy good anime and they have a few movies.
If you like ghosts, magic and spirits, Bleach is for you. Really good anime.
And if you like blood and people head cut off, Ninja Scroll (a movie) is for you too. It's quite good
