I'm shopping for a laptop and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. I'd like something sort of cheap ($600 range, maybe) but decent. I'm not looking for a gaming computer or anything, just enough do run Dreamweaver and Firefox. Any suggestions?

If you have ever heard of HamFests they are a good place to find refurbished laptops. I found one for like $200 750mhz 256mb RAM in real good condition. But like any kind of used product you have to watch you don't get hustled but you can find good deals.

Good luck finding one ~John

Get something refurbished from a manufacturer. They usually come with a full warantee. Then nuke winXP and put linux on it

I'd suggest going used as well. I got a used one for $400 a few years back just for web browsing and email mostly, and it's been well worth the investment.

I didn't need the fancy wide screen or HD display, although I did try to install Counter-Strike on it once just for fun to see how it would work and it turned out it wasn't fun at all.

It's a Celeron 1.9. I'm not a fan of Celeron personally though for day to day use, but it's fine for web browsing and will be cheaper than a Pentium M or 4, or AMD Athlon.

Is it going to be a desktop replacement laptop or just something to keep portable?

You could look for used MacBook or refurbished unit. It's probably little more than $600, but then you would get a machine that can run Mac OSX and Windows XP/Vista. I'm a Mac user and that's my setup. I need XP for few keyword programs, but I do everything else with OSX. Dreamweaver & Firefox are also available for OSX.

You can even run XP in "OSX window" nowadays with great speed. Isn't techno toys great?

Check more info here about running native XP on OSX:

If you're looking for a basic and inexpensive laptop, also try WALMART (check both online and at the actual store)

FWIW I just got a great deal on a Lenovo (makers of the thinkpad) laptop from Office Depot. With rebates about $650.

I did alot of research and this was the best deal I could find. OD has some really good deals once in a while

I got a nice Toshiba laptop about 1.5 years ago, paid about $750 (after rebates) and I use it as my only computer - has 768 MB of RAM, nice 15 inch display.

If I would do it again, I would get the larger 17 inch screen.
