Hey guys --

My younger brother is planning on buying a few Playstation 3's this evening (he's waiting in line haha). He plans on reselling them on eBay a little later as Christmas approaches and people are (as I understand) unable to buy them in the stores. He believes he will be able to sell them for up to or more than double the price. Now that I think about it... it has a strange similarity to domain speculating

Anyhow, I was curious if you guys had any opinions or advice on this? Are any of you guys planning to do the same? Any ideas or advice would be appreciated, as I would like to advise him.

Thank

I did this when the PS2 came out. I bought 2, ended up making about $250 each. There are PS3's on ebay now going for 2-3k. If your brother gets one, he'll make good money for sure.

Once they are released the price will drop sooo fast. $3000 for a $600 system? That is insane markup and a ripoff. Prices unsustainable once supply hits the market.

When do you think would be the ideal time to sell? I wasn't following it closely myself, but I seem to remember a time of unavailability during the period of time after the release of other consoles (e.g. xbox, ps2). Is Sony expecting to be able to meet the demand, or is it likely they'll be sold out, and have more demand than supply? (I'm googling it as well , though if you happen to know).

The markup is definitely a ripoff... though if they're out of stock and Christmas comes around, probably some of the more wealthy parents with kids crying for a PS3 are the ones willing to pay the price.

Thanks guys.

I did the same as woodside when the PS2 came out. Stood in line at Target all night, was able to buy 3 of them and sold them on Ebay for a nice profit. I think I spent $300 each, but sold them for over $1200 each. I did buy some accessories and games to make my auctions better so you got a full package, not just the console. I drove by Walmart today and there was a line forming already...that is just crazy to me now.

I don't have the time to wait in line anymore, although I may have to next week for the day after Thanksgiving day sales start up! If you can stay awake, you can really save some money!

BTW, did you know Sony is LOSING $300 per PS3 console?? They expect to make that up in volume and game sales...just like the xbox360.

I don't like this at all. Maybe it is partially because it took me many months after the chirstmas that the Xbox 360 came out to actually get one. It is crazy. It isn't to bad in my case. My friend and I waited in line right when they came out and didn't get one but we are old enough to not be bothered by it. It really stinks though to see younger kids walking away upset that they can't get their game and some guy in front of the line walking away to sell it for half the price on ebay.

There is a simple solution to this. They should release a very limited number of them like they released the Xbox 360. Then a day or two later they should release a surplus of them and that would end the problem right away.

Another solution would be if people could have just a little patience and didn't pay the outrages prices on ebay, no one would make money, and stop doing it. Then next time you could go buy your kid a new system at normal price.

It would go away so easily if people stopped paying insane amounts of money for them online. The few that are doing that ruin for everyone else who just want to buy a system to play it not to get quick money by pulling a dick move. I think anyone who pays those prices for them should pay to buy everyone else who can't get one, to get one.

The expected shipments have been cut in 1/2. Each store probably gets about 20 or so. (very tiny)

Tell your brother to grab 5 for me too, so I can re-sell them...

Is that the hot item this season?

The one Best Buy I checked here is getting 30+. No camping, though - just lining up at 4am (it's 6 here now - I wonder how many people are there...).

The lead reviewer on our gaming site is trying to get one. I have my fingers crossed for him.

Oh, and I heart free enterprise, too. It's so cool.

I don't think you have any clue on what you're talking about. It's released today and people are selling it for a big profit because the supply is very low. And it's obvious that once more are supplied to store, people will be getting less and less profit if they decide to sell it on ebay.

I don't think you know how to read cause you missed the point of my post, or maybe you are plain stupid.

I was referring to buyers purchasing a PS3 on ebay for $3,000.

I am also aware that supply is very low which is why there is a markup and that prices will decline once more playstations are released into the market.
