The return of chat rooms?

I recently came across some nice chat domains available, but it begs the question - why are they available? I registered them all the same but would like to pose a couple of questions;

Clearly they are not as popular as they once were, what with the explosion of MySpace, Bebo(UK) and to a lesser extent YouTube.

Can webmasters ever expect to generate as much traffic as they maybe once would have?

Maybe chat rooms, or networks were never that big. However to me, it seemed before the profile sites existed, they were being used alot more. Can these kind of sites ever pull back their lost interest?

Matt.

I think the world has already move forward leaving chat rooms in some dark alleys of the universe... There are still use for it though. But doubt it would resurrect meaningfully.

I think chat rooms are kind of outdated.

I know they are outdated, I made the thread to discuss the idea of them ever becoming popular again.

What do you think has replaced them? As far as I know chat rooms / mIRC are the only way to talk real-time to a whole community in the same place.

Chat rooms aren't outdated and aren't exactly unpopular either (IRC anyways). They're just used for different purposes these days; like real time support for a product. I've been involved in quite a few in my teenage years and got back into them the last 3 years and admin channels that have 300 average people logged on at any given time. Most people don't have time to spend chatting in real time with people which is why the social network sites have taken off and why chat rooms aren't used for social networking exclusively (although a lot of times, especially in my case supporting a product, it becomes a social network on its own). With technology changing, chat rooms have also taken on a new look for the most part. Just look at Second Life and on-line games like World of Warcraft.

A perspective I never really thought about to be honest, but a great way to look at it, the advances in technology and MMORPGs have definately had an impact at hindsight!

Now, how do we exploit Second Life? :innocent: Some ladies (and men) are already whoring themselves out for WoW gold, but what about them Lindens?

If you buy a name like baseballchat.com or whatever. You can always use it as a regular site or a forum as well. Chat also can be used as a name for a forum so remember that. The domain can be good as it is remembered easily, but it is more of having good content and getting the traffic itself.
