If you couldn't afford to buy something new for your parents for Christmas - what would you do? Would you just wish them a merry christmas or would you make them a card?

I would write a card. Unfortunately, my mom REALLY likes gifts, even if it's something small. She says it's the thought that counts, but she should also apply that to cards. Good thing I have money to buy her something though.

Ya, that's true. It's always the thought of being sweet to your parents that counts, eh?

Call me a cynic, but I think Christmas is just commercialism any more.

I'd rather give my parents a gift on one of the non-holiday days of the year. Then they know that I was really doing something special for them.

I have to agree with Elemak. Christmas is nice for kids and for people to see their families but apart from that, it means nothing anymore.

Even for the die hard Christians, it's more the coming of Santa than the birth of Jesus.

As for the gift, that it costs $5 or $500 is not important, the important thing is that you choose it well for the person you want to have it. Something that "talks" to your mom, for instance.

I do make personalized greeting cards for my parents and friends. I do paint it myself and write personalized messages.

As a parent, I can tell you I have more than enough "stuff." I've thrown out so much "stuff" it makes me sick to think someone paid money for it. I've cleaned out closets (or the garage) and found presents people gave me for Christmas years ago.

My kids have learned that I'd rather they do something for me. One year, they built a cat run (with the help of my daughter's BF). I paid for the materials. Last year, they changed all the light bulbs in the kitchen - over the cabinets and under the cabinets.

I know that sounds incredibly stupid, but it was something that annoyed me that I was never going to get around to doing myself. I'd be happy if they'd do stuff like that every year instead of buying me stuff. (They did go to Home Depot and they paid for the light bulbs themselves.)

I think I will give them a Christmas card with own writing words.

That's enough for this one.

I would give them a good greeting card! Instead of buying it, I will make one like always. Greeting card are too expensive anyways.
