A man wanted to get into his work building, but he had forgotten his code.
However, he did remember five clues. These are what those clues were:

- The fifth number plus the third number equals fourteen.
- The fourth number is one more than the second number.
- The first number is one less than twice the second number.
- The second number plus the third number equals ten.
- The sum of all five numbers is 30.

- What were the five numbers and in what order?

That's not a riddle, it's just an algebra word problem. Why should we do your algebra homework for you?

E+C=14
D=1+B
A=2B-1
B+C=10
A+B+C+D+E=30

You solve simultaneous equations by substitution, matrices, or whatever method floats your boat (there are at least 7).

Looks like I did something wrong - mine don't equal 30

A = 3
B = 4
C = 6
D = 5
E = 8

how about this
I wanna buy a shirt so I borrowed $50 dollars from my two friends.
The shirt was $97 so I had $3 dollar change. I returned $1 to each of my friends so my depth will only be $49 each.
Adding it up will only get $98 plus the $1 thats left with me, thats $99.

Where did the $1 go?

you are left with $98 not $99 unless i missed something...

As for solving it - it went around in email a couple of years ago so I will let others figure it out.

You spend $97 and have $3 left over. $97/2 = $48.50 + $1 each = $49.50. Then you've got a spare buck so then $49.50 * 2 = $99. $99 + $1 = $100.

Is that right? Is it that you simply can't add up/divide properly

It was a trick question. It was a common trick question for high school students. Great answer, you saw the abstract out of it. instead of adding the dollar, it should have been deducted to the $98 dollar. making it $97. the $2 are with your friends and the $1 is with you making it a $100

My point about the original poster was that it wasn't a riddle, it's just a word problem. I wasn't trying to be mean just pointing out it wasn't a riddle.

The second problem is more of a riddle.

Riddles are fun because there aren't that many of them, there's usually a trick or something.

Word problems you could list millions of them just by reading high school or college textbooks, they are NOT fun (unless you just like doing higher math when you're bored). If so I've got a book on combinatorial algebra that's at least a little more stimulating than simultaneous equations... But even combinations and permutations get REALLY old after about 3 problems, don't you think?

uhu ... im in Higher maths on like A*/b and i fall asleep most lessons lol.

My problem is i get it and once i get it i dont want to do it. so i end up forgetting... i really have to crack down on revision when i get back for my exams
