I don't watch or read manga, but I do read American comic books.
I'm a big fan of the entire Marvel universe, but my two favorite comic book heroes are Captain America and the Punisher. While they occupy opposite spectrums of the hero type graph (or something like that), they're both pretty awesome.
As far as more serious graphic novels go, I'm a big fan of The Watchmen. I recommend it to anyone who doesn't think that graphic novels are a form of art.
