I have officially been a vegetarian for 1 year!! Yeah me!
Are any of you vegetarians? If so, how long have you been a vegetarian, and what is your favorite vegetarian food/recipe?

Congratulations, Steph! I used to be for a while, but I've been eating fish for the omega 3s.

I used to be a couple years back. I loved it. But, I got into the busy life style for a couple years and didnt have time to fix certain stuff to eat. So I fell back into eating meats & all that. But, hopefully I can become a veggitarian again! Good luck!

I had the same experience and Mandi. I was a vegetarian for 9 years but found the time it takes to prepare meals for work was too time consuming. A hamburger is too convenient! I hope to get back to being a vegetarian. At the present time, I have cut way back on my meat consumption.

Those of you who are or have been a vegetarian at some point, why do you choose to be a vegetarian?

I'm a vegetarian. In Seattle, at least, there isn't any trouble finding a garden burger, or more often it's great Indian food. And Ethiopian. And a long list, but some kofta and pokoras make me a happy man.

I'm a vegetarian for the last 19 years ... I just can't stand what animals have to endure until we get our steak or chicken on our plate.

I went to visit someone and they ran a farm that produced eggs. When the chickens would become crippled with arthritis they sold them to Campbells Soup! Never looked at Chicken Noodle Soup the same way again. If you have ever seen a chicken house, I think anyone would think twice before eating them again.

I have never been a vegetarian, love red meat to much but I agree with Jodder about chicken farms - seen a program on TV (hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall) free range is my choice of chuck nowadays

I am not going to lie. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than sinking my teeth into a delicious, juicy, rare, steak; and by god if its wrong, then I don’t want to be right.
Having said that, congrats Stephanie, I know that must take discipline and will power.

I was vegetarian for two years then I got pregnant and was told I needed iron badly and my god the first steak I ate was bloody nice but in saying that I still prefer vegetarian meals anyday, I only eat meat maybe two or three nights a week if that and mainly chicken and fish, but I do like my steak .... my son however is a rabid meat eater lol.

I have never been a big meat eater. Once I found out meat was animals, I have always had an even more difficult time eating it. I am a major animal lover and just can't stand to think about eating one of them. Its like I am eating my cat or dog or something. For the last several years, I would always say, "ugh, I am going to become a vegetarian!", but never did. Finally, this time last year, I was working with a girl who was a vegetarian. She helped inspire me to go ahead and "take the plunge" into being a vegetarian.
I do crave a cheeseburger from time to time, and it is a little difficult to eat on the run. I think the convenience factor is the most difficult part. I am learning though! I have also found that more and more fast food chains are catering to vegetarians. Burger King even sells a veggie burger that isn't too bad. But fast food is still kind of a challenge for me...I guess that could be conceived as a good thing though since fast food is bad for you anyway!

It takes like crap! It is a veggie burger by Morning Star Farms. They have much better offerings. Their products are available in most grocery stores and Wal-Mart. Their veggie bacon and they have a burger that is made out of grains which IMO is wonderful. Oh and a new black bean burger which is the best
If you have a health food store near, try the vegetarian meats by Loma Linda Foods.

I don't know if I would call BK's veggie burger crap, but I guess it leaves something to be desired. But it is a good option other than a salad when you are looking for fast food, and I have to give them props for trying. There are 2 local places here that have veggie burgers that are really really good. I am not sure of any other nation wide chains that have veggie burgers yet though.
I have tried some of the Loma Linda stuff and a lot of it is pretty good.
I have yet to try the morning star farms bacon....is it just me, or does it look like play dough??

Well if you don't cook their bacon long enough it is wimpy and doesn't taste as good. Make sure you fry it crisp The Grillers are the ones they sell at the fast food places.
These are the products I've tried and liked.
The Spicy Black Bean Veggie Burgers
Garden Veggie Patties
Veggie Corn Dogs
Chik n Nuggets
These are the ones I want to try

For Loma Linda products, I really enjoy the Little Links
http://www.kelloggs.com/cgi-bin/bran...269&company=41
and their frozen lunch meats chicken, corned beef and wham
http://www.kelloggs.com/cgi-bin/bran...emplate=frozen
Prosage is about the best sausage substitute.
EDIT:
I thought I would mention I have eaten the Loma Linda/Worthington products for 25 years

I am not a big meat eater but I have reduced the frequency to just once a week. As you age, it is good to be a vegetarian for your own health
