some people may join and love this forum but then never reply to the confirmation email or delete it by mistake and then cant login here so they never post.
Some other people may not check their email for a while and not confirm their account, once they see they cant post they hate it and they leave.

there may be many other reasons.

And, some people are only readers and not posters. I know, we call 'em lurkers, but I didn't want to scare them off. After all, they may post some day.

Dave

In the great book, Tao of Forums, many people have joined, but few have posted.

Hi benmoore,

Dave may be right...these people might just be people who read and never post. After all, they do gain access to the excellent tips and tricks forum just by registering.

Otherwise, I think at least a third of all the members on almost all popular message boards have no posts (unfortunately, they're not called Virgin Talkers on those boards ). Just take a look at the three other major message boards, and you'll see what I mean.

Yes, it is a mixture of several different types of members.

Some may be false leads thru our affiliate program, some are just lurkers, some maybe didnt not want to give out their real email address and thus never got the confirmation email etc...

I will be doing a little cleaning and deleting of members who never replied to the confirmation email shortly, so you will see the members base drop by a couple hundred...

At the risk of sounding totally foolish...what about those of us (I hope there's more than just me!), who have no idea of where to start? As there is no "Webmasters help for complete idiots forum", some may find it quite difficult and intimidating choosing the right questions to ask. As I find it hard to stop talking I can't help but say Hi! (my dad has a quite suitable pet name for me) There are some nasty people out there whom love to prey on and intimidate those that are learning. I also beleive that "readers" must benefit in some way from reading the input of others here.
Was that a constructive and logical opinion???? If not feel free to say "Shut-up Deb!"
Take care all
Love Deb x

good suggestion - a beginners room would be good

i would say that most people here are very helpful. It is hard though sometimes to determine if the person is a totally new webmaster or theyre just being an idiot

prime example of this is withing the first 3 posts they advertise a site or affiliate link of theirs (sometimes more than once) - a lot of new webmasters do this and dont know why it is frowned upon but there are some who know the score and do it anyway to get a few cheap hits

but they have to follow the rules like everyone else - a few here have been politely warned and have gone on to do it again and then plead ignorance. So in my opinion, regardless of experience, posts which break the rules have to be snipped quickly as webmasters come here to chat, learn and help - not follow someone elses affiliate link

All webmaster forums have this problem though and chief is doing very good so far - long may it continue

Hey miss_deb,

Not a big deal, but it is easier to read your posts if they are non-italic

I will discuss with the other admins and mods about a "beginners" forum. Remember that you can always post suggestions in the new suggestions and feedback forum...

I think Deb should put that in the suggestion forum. Hey, more experience for her! Hehe!

As for "complete idiots", is that an oxymoron? Anyway, lack of experience does not make one an idiot.

As Deb said, there occasionally arises one of the nasties that will give you a gruff, rough, argumentative answer. We try to help those people too, but they usually don't stay around much.

So for everyone, if you ask a question and someone is belittling in their answer, ignore that one and wait for the good members to come along and help you out. You can also report it to the moderator of the forum by using the small link in the bottom right corner of their reply.

Dave

**Dave started to ask how to determine if a webmaster is a beginner, but decided to wait and add that to the discussion when Deb starts a thread in the suggestion forum about a "Beginners" forum.

Geemyknee! I didn't recognize the post! :P

I don't think the post sounded silly, having a beginner forum might be very acceptable and very good. I would only suggest putting the suggestion in the suggestion forum so we could discuss it and make suggestions about the suggestion. It might be really good as a step-by-step getting started guide.... oops, starting discussing it here.

Come on Deb, get over there and suggest it!

Dave

Hey all
Have my head in the dictionary everyday, but you got me on the oxymoron word...for a while anyway. No Dave it's not an oxymoron. Just as windows publishes guides for "complete idiots", admitting that I have less knowledge than others is not a contradictory term and therefore not an oxymoron. hehehe...sorry dave had to look it up rather than ask another silly question!

Hi there redcircle
you can count me out of the "know it all" & "younger crowd" category...not sure which category you would put me in , but the young people in here put up with me so they must be ok!
Take care

I'm new to this forum, and I beleive a beginners section would help those of us who are a bit nervous about posting. If there is an accepted etiquette on this forum, how about posting it so we newbies at least get a chance not to violate it? Most of us want to do the right thing, but we have to know what it is first

Hi Chuck,

There is an announcement at the top of every forum that has the general rules for Webmaster-Talk. This is a good place to start.

Click here to view the announcement - Forum Rules

Or did you mean more than that?

Dave
