Hi,

Well i (and many others at my school) are rather peeved off about our leaving prom.

The venue which has been booked is too small.
the prom committee dont actually appear to be making any decisions and its all our head of year.

The previous year if you had below 80% attendance you couldnt go.

This year if you have below 90% you cant go.
If you have more than 20 lates.
If you dont have high enough grades
If you have been suspended/excluded.
If you have more than 5 time outs...

Is it just us that think the leaving prom shouldnt matter about all that?

Is it just me who thinks that our prom should be for all to leave our secondary education (highschool 16yo) with fun and a good memory?

I am interested in everyones view i want to know if this is just me and what the situation is where u live with proms.

P.s found out yesturday i cant go because i have 25 lates (baring in mind i have been in when i was ill and really sick just to get enough attendance.)

I was peeved off with it before now i think its just silly.

Dan

I didn't go to my prom, and don't regret it.

I guess if it means enough to you you'll make sure you're grades and behavior are good that year right? :P

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a certain level of discipline to be allowed to celebrate at a school event.. But then I'm old (my kid is 21) and I think that kids have it FAR too easy these days..

We had a girl in my high school, cheerleader, student government, 3.7 gpa (out of 4.0) and was not allowed to graduate with us because she decided not to attend her morning class the last semester of school..

I have become a big fan of rules, expectations, and consequences as I get older because I see so many people incapable of following the rules that apply to the real world.. It sucks, but I'd rather see someone learn that lesson young than later in life after struggling for years and not understanding that actions have consequences..

proms are great I guess. I made it to my prom but only enjoyed the after party, of course it only happens once so I think one should attend to it. I just don't understand why prom have to have some sort of qualifications for your school.

My 15yr old daughter is looking forward to her prom soon and I believe her school is doing something similar.

Personally I think the 'qualifying' expectations are a little high for a prom from what you have noted.

Like a few others have mentioned I belive that on the whole the younger generation does have it far too easy in most things and tend to have everything sugar coated with little or nothing done when they act like n**bs but if you are a good student, well behaved and don’t go around causing any trouble, and your getting penalised for being late a few times - (especially when you've been in ill and turned in which most employed people would take as a perfect excuses for a day off) - I think they may be being a little harsh.

From discussions with my daughter I know you can be a few minutes late and, with her school using an electronic registration there’s no explanations etc and we get a phone call (IMO the phone call is a good thing) but I think you should have been able to attend the prom - My Daughter works very hard, is very well behaved (unusually so for a 15 yr old but she does have her moments) and never (hardly) gets into any trouble - if the school stopped her going for a few 'lates' I would probably get on the phone to the school if she asked me to.

There is a world of difference in stopping youngsters who have no respect for anyone and cause trouble and vandalism to the ones that are typical 15 / 16 yr olds who knuckle down to class work and respect their parents and others. If your genuinely bothered and want to go why not put your case forward? What’s the worst they can say?

Well my mum did call up as soon as i told her... still waiting three days letter for that call back they promised. *scowl*

If i am still told i cannot go on the last day i will be putting my 110% efforts into the alternate prom which is being organised.

We mostly people who dont fit the 'criteria' are organising our own prom.
which at the moment is looking like will be a good $12 cheaper! lol

We just looking to get the numbers and will be a real posibility.

Thanks

Dan

I think prom should be for everyone at your school - except for maybe people who are expelled.
The rules at your school seem kind of strict to me.

Wow, strict school. I mean mine is supposed to be strict, but by the looks of it yours is more. 90% attendance, you're joking right? What about people that couldn't make it in them days, not ditching school but actually sick.

Whats a time out?

Proms are great and is a great experience. It is something to treasure, something to talk about in reunions, something worth remembering. Well, every people has their own experience for their prom, I just feel sorry for you never making it to the prom. It maybe one night but the memory is forever.
