Seems that many doctors want to classify internet addiction as a true clinical disorder, treated some times with time in the hospital.

I mostly sure that no.
I can spend 12 hours in front of my screen, but I can spend 2 weeks away from any computer too without a regret.
In that case, I tend to write concept or pseudo code on paper sure, but I surely wont "experience genuine withdrawal symptoms".

I love spend my free time on programming, but it's not like I cannot live without it.
As the second comment says, it's a lack of self control to put yourself in that situation. It's like a child that always had what he wanted had grown up, and that he won't change is way of life.

Why not TV addiction then? Most American adults spend 4+ hours per day in front of the television. I'm on the internet all the time because (1) it's my business and (2) it's where I get news/information and where I go to learn. But I hardly ever watch TV. /shrug

How do they detox an internet junky? I understand the de part, but not so much the -tox. And do they make people switch over to text messaging, like heroin addicts are given methadone?

I love the internet, but I can walk away from it at any time. Like nyef stated, it's my business and learning venture.

No - there was a storm in October of 2006 that knocked out my internet for a week. I didn't have withdrawl, and during the summer months there will be frequent days when I'm not online much if at all.

i dont know how you will call it but there are people who find ways to use the computer whenever they feel the urge of using it for games...

I use the internet as a resource, only a small part of my time goes for social/personal use so I don't know yet, only play games every once in a while. so, i guess I am not that much of a junky.

And are you allowed to file for ssd for this condition so that you have more time to stay at home in front of your computer and feed your addiction, lol! Maybe it will make their "blue book" of accepted conditions?

I'm actually so deep in the hole that I've been injecting that metallic comcast fluid right into my veins. You would be surprised how quickly you can get things done on a broadband fix .

I remember doing a paper on this once, I think internet addiction is handled much in the same way substance abuse is handled.
