I was a little young for the '60s ... I was born toward the end of the 1970s. It's amazing that Carlin spanned so much time; that he spoke so well to two generations.
One evening I heard him being interviewed on the radio. He told the interviewer ( Terri Gross, maybe? ) about his mother reading the newspaper to him every morning. He said he had a strong memory of her reading a sentence, then pausing to say "The words, George! They cut like steel. Do you hear the drama?" then going back and rereading it to him. Language can be a strange thing to show respect for like that, but ... we're social animals. George Carlin was onto something, there.
He'll definitely be missed.
