I like both for different reasons. Cats are more independent, and their intelligence runs that way, but that's why they typically take to a litter box right away, and can even be toilet trained! Even domesticated, they're wild, and most could fend for themselves if lost. And for all that, they're still affectionate. Dogs are more dependent, so are better for hunting or as service animals. But don't call my rat terrier dumb--I have to spell in front of him, and sometimes that doesn't work!

My cat's a Hemingway, which is a mutation where the cat has six toes per paw and the paws are reversed, right for left. She grew up playing "bait the beagle", tagging him, running off to hide, waiting to pounce (usually from the tub) and running off again. Even at seven she still plays with Benny (the rat terrier). If they're both in a playful mood (which happens often) I'll occasionally play cat-dog laser tag with them, where they alternate pouncing the laser dot and one another.

LadynRed, you crack me up. I suppose one could characterize dog behavior that way, but I'm not sure thats a bad thing. Children are 100% dependent, loving and devoted creatures until a certain age of independence, probably by evolution since the really nasty independent babies got ignored by their parents and that gene pool died off.

I currently have both cats and dogs, but on a basic level I'd say I'm a dog person. On a cleanliness basis, they are both filthy animals, dogs eating their own feces, cats coughing up hairballs, and both occupying 80% of the day licking their genitals and using the planet like their own personal toilet. On a personality basis, Cats are generally disloyal, fickle, anti-social and independent. Dogs are loyal to a fault, protective, and extremely social. On a usefulness basis, cats serve no purpose. A dog (Real dog) defends your home, your possessions, and most importantly your family.
