Hello Ladys and Gents:

I had built my first website using a WYSIWG software, when I didnt know anything about html or strict guidelines to follow when building a website. Through time and learning I feel its better to build a website from scratch rather than using a WYSIWG software. A friend at work had ask me this question,

Would creating a website from scratch vs WYSIWG be considered cheating.

I don't understand how creating a website from scratch would be considered cheating. Why would your friend think it was cheating?

I can understand how using a WYSIWYG might be thought as cheating...because you aren't really doing the work, you are just letting the program put code together (and the code they put together is usually very very messy!)

If you want to make websites, you should definitely learn how to code a page from scratch.

That was a very good point. Some how we got on the topic and the question just stuck with me. So I just wanted to put it out there to see what other people views was on the topic.

Only if running the whole race yourself instead of hiring somebody who looks like you to finish in your place is also called cheating. How you're going about it is absolutely the right way, and going to lead to the best code - possibly also the best design, since you won't find yourself limited by the coding skills in your WYSIWG.

Writing code from scratch is very fulfilling and also leaves room for you to learn, because you might use a function and decide it could be more tailored to your needs, then you start making it so it does. And that is good fun as well as giving a feel-good factor. Learn a lot too.

Hey, that's just how I see it. Looking at your signature, maybe there's a better analogy, tho. Say you're a marine, with a mission I don't have clearance to talk about. Would you rather rely on your buddy to be able to hire some local to drive you through 50 miles of enemy territory (that translates into relying on a WYSIWYG to get the coding right for your design), or are you going to get a fellow marine to fly you in a marine helicopter, so you don't have to rely on something that might or might not work? Probably #2, if it's anything important. A WYSIWYG editor is great if you just need to pound something out quickly, and quality isn't as important as speed. But it can be a liability, putting your trust in it.

I'd still say it's not cheating to do things the old fashioned way, by hand. A WYSIWYG is like a ski lift, vs hiking all the way up the mountain. And I don't anyone would call the climber a cheater. But even aside from that, you're still doing it the best way possible to get the job done, and to hone your skills. So, cheers!

To be honest, I started with a WYSIWYG. I almost never looked at the code. Now, after learning how to code, I use the WYSIWYG aspect of Dreamweaver maybe 0.01% of the time and I would never go back. That said, if using a WYSIWYG editor outputted good code and allowed me to do everything I do now, I wouldn't hesitate. Unfortunately, that doesn't exist yet.

well for me it is better to start from scratch but if you feel to finished the website soon, you can use that WYSIWYG.

I don't think that is cheating, you are just trying to make build in a faster way.
