That's not true. I would say following the collapse of the Roman empire, Europe lost a significant amount of knowledge and technology, some of which it only regained following the renaissance.
Anyway, the biggest threat to the internet, technology and even ourselves in relation to technology is the creation and deployment of an EMP bomb. EMP stands for Electromagnetic Pulse - if such a pulse was sent out across the country (via detonating such a bomb in the atmosphere), any computer hardware within a very large area would become unusable. All modern CPUs and a lot of other hardware is susceptible to electromagnetic interference, so an EMP bomb could take out virtually every modern computer in the area. That's not just computers - almost all modern technology would be affected!
Let's just hope terrorists don't manufacture one of these and use it!
