My beautiful wife can't stand the word "chug". It doesn't come up very often, but last night we had made a trip to Safeway (a supermarket in California) and overheard some college kids talking about a party. You should have seen her cringe when the word chug came up.

Turns out this isn't terribly uncommon. From an article I found on word aversion, moist seems to be the most hated. There are a lot of others. Rough, course, hubub - hated by someone who describes just not liking the way they sound. That's what my wife said about chug. Somebody else doesn't like pus, because it sounds so much like what it is. Others have sexual connotations.

So, with no profanity, are there any ordinary words you just don't like?

The word that irritates me the most is not a word, yet people insist on using it. Where I live it is quite popular to say "yous" as in "Are yous going to the store?" My hubby used to say this quite frequently, but after years of my telling him that there were no ewes in our vicinity I think I have eradicated it from his vocabulary!

One that just sounds nasty to me is "ointment" - I don't know why but it sounds gross. I wouldn't say I cringe when I hear it but I think I tend to wince when I say it myself.

It's not really a word in my case, but more related to an idea.
I simply can't stand peoples whining and complaining, if it's not backed up with a real good reason.
I run away from them as far away as I can...

I once quit a job because my superior was whining all the day long about this and that, and that person who was such an a**hole, and that company that was so incompetent.
After 3 month, (standard test period on a new job, where a contract can be terminated from week to week), when I was asking if I wanted to stay, I said no.
That guy was simply a "good humor" sucking machine.

For a long time already, the ambiance where I work is way more important to me that all the rest.
Money including, as long as I can live decently (ie: pay the bills and allow myself a bit of time off without having to take a credit) with my family.

I do not like the word spick, that really pisses me off for some reason, im Spanish thats why

The word that gets me to cringe the most is, "they," or a variant such as, "those people". I've never met "them", yet "they" are at the same time experts and idiots. I don't particularly have a high opinion of people with a well-developed "they" concept.

I hate it when people mess up words - i.e. there, their and they're. If someone took 5 minutes to research which each of them actually meant, there wouldn't be a problem. In a news article I was reading, a teacher admitted not even bothering to correct these sorts of mistakes anymore - what sort of message does that send out?!

But as English is not my primary language, at least I do have an excuse.

I hate it when people misuse their/there/they're and you're/your

Also the misuse of the word "gay" but I already ranted about that in another thread.

One thing I'm bad at and really want to improve is when to use me/I. (e.g: Randi and I went to the zoo. Mom gave a piece of Cake to Dave and me.) I know the rule but i need more time to get use to it. (I haven't been speaking English for a long time as you can probably tell.)

The different forms of there (a place) and their (belongs to them) and they're (they are) bug me, too. They're different words.

It's like The Smurfs, that old TV cartoon, where these blue people who lived under mushrooms would talk to each other, but replace a word in each sentence with smurf. As in "The way you people talk is smurf confusing." Again, it's not the same word at all.

We're and were trip me up, too. Every time somebody means to abbreviate we are and writes were, it confuses me for a split second. I wonder "You were - what?"

For me, I don't have any word in English that can upset/annoy me. But I have loads of word in my native language that can really upset me, specially if I am accompanied by my gf. But, I won't like if someone is talking about racism.
