So I'm moving and rather than loose me my company has agreed to let me work remotely on contract. This will be my first time doing this on a full time basis. I wanted to see if anyone has advice they think would be helpful. Currently the biggest concern for me is the lifestyle change of not going into an office every day. I'll need to make it a personal effort to get myself out of the house regularly so I don't become a hermit.

Working from home is a whole other ball game. You need to set strict hours that you will work. Define an area of your house that is your office.. when you are in your office.. you are at work. No interruptions. Make sure to find ways to get out of the house.. otherwise you will loose your mind!

There are a lot of great articles out there. If you need some links, I can look threw my bookmarks.. I know a have a few.

Good luck,

Sam

I work from home and have a wife and a 3yr old boy. That is the hardest part.. try to work around your family. If you live alone, then your biggest challenge will probably be setting a schedule and staying on task.

I may be able to find some other articles later this evening.

Setting a work schedule & sticking to it is an absolute necessity. Whether you live alone or have a family it is the biggest challenge of working from home. You have to treat it just like you are going to an office. You will either wind up having a nervous breakdown from working 24/7 or you won't accomplish what you need to in the time frame it needs to be done (depending on your personality).

I couldn't agree more with what has been said. The hardest challenge will be setting work hours and sticking to them. You will find its very easy to stay up late to get work done (I have done this until 3 or 4pm) which means you are wasted for the next day (when other people in an office want to get hold of you!).

After you have finished your working day, put the work down and dont pick it back up again until the next day - just like you would if you worked out of an office.

Be sure to stay in the same routine your in now with regards to getting up in the morning as I have found its easy to have an extra half hour in bed, three weeks later your not getting up till 10.30am or later (this was a while ago BTW I dont do this anymore )

All of this comes down to self discipline and it may help to read a few books or articles relating to time management.
