I hope we really do get to learn something new, discover a new fundament of the universe. We really should!

I think it's a wonderful thing that we're able to extend our knowledge this far. It's our special relationship to the laws of physics that separate us from all other life.

It's really incredible, and I would really like to be able to see that place once.
Living at less than 2 hours of the place, I surely will do it one day.
I have read this week that the holes to access it are big enough to put a cathedral into them.

Today's Test
The LHC had a test run today with a beam of protons. Basically it was to ensure that everything was functioning the way it was meant to, and the test proved to be a success! The actual collision is scheduled to be held on October x (Can't really remember the exact date lol).

The God Particle

Long ago, Democritus theorized the idea of atoms. Although his research wasn't really based on scientific fact and experiments, he showed a wonderful thinking process. He figured that if he took a piece of paper, and the ripped it in half, and then again, and again, and again, and again, etc ... (Pretending that he could physically do so), he would be left with an indestructible one, the basic building block of all matter. He called this "one" the atom.

We all know about the atom, so I won't talk too much about it. HOWEVER, we should also all know that it's made up of three important little guys. The proton, the electron, and the neutron. Now we have sub-atomic particles. But wait, I thought the atom was the "one", the basic building block of everything ....? Well, there goes that idea. Now we have those three little dudes. These must be it, we're done, these are the one, and again the "lego" of all matter. NOT!

Let's consider the following:
We know that a proton is much, much, MUCH heavier than an electron. This means that it's mass is greater. Really, those two statements are one and the same. I just like to repeat myself, hah. No, let's make sure we grasp this concept. If one is heavier than the other, then they aren't our lego. One has more "stuff" inside of it. If one has more stuff, then there's something smaller than a proton and an electron. It's what gives them their weight. Just like the protons and the neutrons give the weight of the atom.

So wait, what's smaller than a proton, an electron, and a neutron? Well .. nothing yet! We have no clue lol (at least I don't think we do).

Basically the LHC is smashing those two proton beams together to see what comes out. To see what the building block of all matter, to find the true "atom", to find the "God Particle", or so they call it.

Chemistry as we know it, might completely change based on the results of this experiment!

Replicating the Big Bang
The LHC is also supposed to replicate the change that occurred after the big bang. What this means is that we'll have real evidence that might support the theory, finally silence other that oppose it, change our view of physics, and have a real life model to study! Maybe this will get cool, and create a small little mini universe, in a contained environment, that could be used to actually have a visual of our true origins!

What's Gonna Happen?
a) We create a mini black whole which will continue to expand, and supposedly grow large enough, over a span of 50 months, to swallow earth as we know it. The interesting part is: It collides with the Mayan prediction of the end of the world in 2012. I did say 50 months :P.

All Should leve Geneva
Saturn turns from gold to Iron
The contrary positive ray will exterminate everything
There will be signs in the sky before this.
Well ... you can read it for yourself. It's pretty creepy that both Nostradamus, the French Prophet, and the Mayan calendar both predict our doom in relation to this device.

b) Nothing happens, and the experiment is a success!

I know one thing for sure:
If we can replicate the big bang, or something close to it, we are very screwed if we try it. Something HAS to happen. So if this thing ends up replicating the start of our universe. I seriously believe that we're going to die. Now, the question is ... will it do so?

Side Notes
The protons are going to collide at 99.98% of the speed of light.

Well, my advice is that if you're betting on if the earth survives after the test, take the over.

Some people felt that the first atomic (test) detonation would spark a chain reaction (which it did, to explode) that would grow unchecked, until it vaporized the Earth like a mini sun.

The protons will collide at basically light speed, but it will be relatively few of them, and they're very small. It's entirely possible they'll create a miniature black hole, but I don't understand why some people are suggesting it could grow out of bounds forever?

Maybe they have been watching Black Hole or Event Horizon

Personally I prefer Supermassive Black Hole.

ROTFLMAO! John, do a search on what "fundament" means. I think they're trying to find our origins, not our end products.

@ Andrei -- Keep in mind that in chemistry, electrons act as the "legos".

I've always found it fascinating that most of what makes up what we see as solid matter is essentially empty space. I'll await with great anticipation the findings of this project. I wonder if they'll actually find tachyons (so far as I know, they're still theoretical)?
