Sometimes signature link targeting cracks you up. Who am I to point fingers, eh? Coming to a webmaster forum and advertising hosting on every post.

I wonder where the dating market is, though? Do techies really go in for online dating? I've always considered it too uncool for someone already, as a techie, singled out (as a group) as uncool.

It's a curious question to ask - I mean, it has absolutely no relevance and it is totally unnatural - the least convincing ploy at traffic targeting I've seen for hours (well, not an hour goes by without seeing something cringeworthy).

I suppose the premise for this target selection is that a lot of techies are asian and therefore an asian dating site is going to go down well among techies! Interesting. Let me know if you get any sales. I'd love to figure out where to actually sell dating!

I thought I'd enhance this thread with an interesting postulation I chanced upon during the course of my work: I think dating could be sold well on sites pertaining to things like these:

beyonce, other "pop" stars, (it used to be about music)
clothes
dieting, food
and...

the one that made me realise the kind of people you'd need to aim at...

yes, tolkien - ALL the people I've known who really NEED a dating site are very into tolkien

Perhaps the thread starter should bear this in mind in future.

The responses on this thread are starting to create a sort of free for all opensource dating model, thus responding to the attempt to sell dating on a webmaster site by turning the thread into competition against the dating site. Intriguing.

But imagine this: (separately) I was just thinking - what if the aliens from the film Alien were walking around our planet. Imagine one of THOSE arriving at your bedroom window from the outside.

My talk of aliens who are able to suck your brains out with a strange proboscus has made me spot yet another good market for people selling dating: horror films... go to where horror films are being sold, discussed or otherwise absorbed and sell dating there: I think that's a good way to reach the female dating market... give them someone to comfort them when they're scared. Of course the minority of them will perhaps worry that the dating site will lead them to yet another monster, so you won't win em all.. but who does?

Another good target market for dating HAS to be religious groups - religious sites etc surely attract people amongst whom there is a stronger desire to seek out formal and easily-contained dating solutions, due to the tight restrictions and taboos created by religion, whether they seek dating specific to their religion or seek to break barriers and date others, the capacity to contain the activity and hide it well from prying influences and authoritarian moralities would serve people in such circs very well... and I DO see a lot of religious dating ads on religion sites, which means they must churn good dosh.

I expect mattress sites and bed/sex related sites would get LOW turnouts for dating - people focusing on that area of the relationship are not seeking new partners.

But organic eating... suggests not the kind of frugality born out of young parenthood, very possibly pre-serious-relationship... so organic stuff (except for organic baby goods, probably).

There's probably so very many markets for dating, and is it any wonder? It is a market that cannot be pushed and shoved by ordinary market forces - it may not be taboo or low down like the porn and other sex-related product markets, but it is still fully tied into unavoidable biological realities, and will always be a needed trade.

I'd be curious to see how well dating sold to people who spent their time reading and writing - writers, researchers, programmers, developers, editors, administrators... because to people who read so much gloss all day and are used to pretending humanity is sooo professional and smooth and underneath it so intelligent and wise and disciplined, and then face the average dating-site "profile", are immediately scarred by the sight of the grim reality of how vacuous and pointless our species really is.

and a lot of them allow you to profile by race and age and height and hair colour, probably salary, maybe car type, party they vote for, blood type, gun licence number, etc.

still, you gotta do what you gotta do. it's all about the money, son. was that michael caine or not?

Looks like I got it spot on for the people of Gaza - that was their xmas. It's really amazing to read the stuff I was talking about then and compare it to my ideas right now. I'm pretty glad about the changes and updates.
