With that, though, comes street smarts. You never want to put info on what's basically a public domain (yes, even the "private" parts) that's sensitive and could be used for identity theft. You should never use such a service that requires it.
There is another paid position that looks at such info, especially on social networking sites -- law enforcement. One reason is to root out people like pedophiles and identity thieves. Another reason is because some people are so stupid or blatant as to broadcast their obviously illegal activity on said sites, never thinking that they are VERY public, not just to their friends.
But back to the first point, webmasters can and do try to increase the "street smarts" of users to avoid getting scammed or hijacked, and do what they can to increase security and inform others how to do the same, sometimes for pay, sometimes for free. The net is still predominantly self-policed. And offers like that you can forward not only to orgs like Knujon (who've shut down quite a few such ops like you're mentioning) but traditional law enforcement, some of which has by necessity started taking notice of such things.
Fact is, the mean streets have always been mean, it's just that new technology makes them more mobile and more noticeable in the new forms that they take.
