Since summer I have adopted a strict dress code when working for myself at home on my business - I wear a sharp and amazing-looking suit produced by YSL, along with high quality shirts and mindblowingly tasteful ties.
When i worked briefly for some of the most goonish muthas I met, in town, doing telesales, hidden away inside offices, I was expected to dress like this - in that job (which was after working in the defence sector) I had to ring up seriously rich muthas and "talk down" to them, and force them into buying "meeting packages" for 15k and upwards a shot.
The idea is that if you "powerdress" you give yourself a sense of what it is you are doing - you equal yourself to the task before you. If you want to make a lot of money, you must dress for it. Okay, it's not compulsory, but it helps. Sure you can put on your shorts and t-shirt too, but I find that dressed in my suit, not only do I inspire shame and worry amongst family members who still don't understand any of the successes I already had (and anyone else who thinks I don't have a right to dress up and look as good as I do - since they obviously think only a ratrace slave is permitted that),
I also inspire in myself a lot of self-belief and confidence that has the added advantage of making people outside treat me very well, not just the advantage of driving me to work as though I'm already more than most people who dress in this way. I suppose it's quite clear that a LOT of sales people dress in this way for this reason. Which means most people in suits aren't really "there" yet - they're still on the journey.
I got the idea from jarvis cocker (well partly from david tennant's doctor who, but I rapidly worked out he based it on jarvis cocker's jarvis cocker). I notice I'm at post 377 - that old hymn. When a knight won his spurs in the stories of old, he was gentle and brave, he was gallant and bold (when he bored holes in his enemy, I suppose he did it in a gentle way, maybe taking his hanky out to wipe the tear in his gallant eye!)
