I found a thread, buried among about 2000, on this site, which PRECISELY gave away the method I use to make legit, foolproof, permanent-profit, recession-proof money (that which I metaphorically refer to as my "tardis").
I didn't bump it (and you'll never find it, hard as you may try, but the mods can easily, since I gave its author rep points) but it defies your theory that old posts are a waste. Anyone who does find that one will get rich - because I ain't spellin it out for anyone, that's for sure. Instead I replied to one (also very old) which was interesting and potentially profitable but only depending on a wide variety of circs beyond my control.
Also, old posts are part of the page trail through which users enter the site. One way I also browse this site is to view the "what people are reading" page (i forget the actual name) - and then I go and read what they're reading. It's fun. People are reading so much stuff round the clock here, and you'd never pick that stuff out yourself - you get inspired seeing what others are doing.
But I wasn't talking about that, nor was Chris I don't suspect - the "new posts" link (common on all forums) is the main way a lot of people browse a forum - watching new posts as they arise and reading/writing to all the latest, live, current stuff.
It's definitely the more sensible way to read forums! I never manage to get into the habit. I'm a hierarchy-browser, that's me. I was born to use yahoo, clearly (but strangely never did!).
bytheway, mofodog is the coolest username I've ever seen, ever.
