So what do you think? Is this economic recession that we are experiencing affect the business of web developers? And how so? Are web designers losing jobs because of clients' new-found frugality, or does it stimulate business because clients are trying to push their businesses to newer heights? What have you experienced in the last few months, and what do you think will happen in the future? You can vote with the poll, and/or post what you think on this thread.

I can't speak for anyone else, but my business has been doing better the last few months. I don't think it has much to do with the economy though. I think it's more some of the things I put in place a few years ago are starting to pay off.
I've always believed my success or lack of success in business has more to do with me than the economy. A bad economy just means you have to do things differently.

Add an "I don't know" button. My business has slowed down a little bit, but I'm not sure it has anything to do with the overall economy. Also, it looks like it's about to pick up quite a bit.

I would, but it won't let me edit my poll. Maybe one of the Mods could help?

I firmly believe that a down economy is the perfect time to grab market share and prove your worth to clients..

I voted for "I think it's creating business" for the web developers, I could be wrong. The big companies and local stores are heavily advertising to promote more business, which in turn they would want their websites updated, current and new promotional ideas, ect. As for me, it hasn't made a difference as I only design two of my own websites which one is my husband's business.

With a sudden burst of smart, educated workers becoming unemployed, it is quite possible that the web design industry will actually swell, if these people have any savings, and start to build websites in an effort to make money independently. It will likely be a very good time for overseas freelancers and outsourcing companies who work at a reduced rate.

We've been wondering that, ourselves! Our client volume has not gone down, and our queries have actually gone up a little bit. It might be a side effect of businesses having to reform because of the recession, actually. Their changes have to be reflected on their websites, so they go seeking out modifications they otherwise would not pursue.
At a certain level, web design companies are being affected just the same as any other, and it would behoove (love that word) anyone to prepare for a downturn in business. I think this is another key difference sheltering web designers from the recession, though. They're agile enough to weather instant changes in the marketplace.

I'm not 100% sure, I mean, maybe new website designs, but maybe not banner designs...
I think there would probably be more orders on banners, trying to get people to purchase their services, saying theres sales or something... trying to part people with their money in this difficult time
Maybe for smaller web design companies, they may be losing money and getting less orders.

Intelligent people recently laid off work could/can/are joining up with graphic designers and they are making websites. Plus its free to code in notepad, you can do it in a library.

As I predicted last week, my business has picked up, and now I have a stupid amount of work. Which works out well for me, because I'm stupid. Just look at my face.

I think that it is killing business and that it is killing some businesses.
I run a website hosting company and i have reduced prices to $4 per month for our starter plans and some other plans are also more affordable.
It needs to work things out.

It is definitely possible that it will create business, though I still voted "I don't know". I think it will create business for outsourcing nations, for those sectors that take advantage of the global freelance market.

A recession is a good thing because it shakes things up and cuts the fat.
Is it going to solve some serious problems we have on this world? I don't think so. We're still heading towards an oil crash, still have a climate that is changing dramatically (or just changing too quickly?), still have rampant overpopulation, etc etc etc. But this is a web design discussion, anyways, hehe.

Recently I asked a fellow web designer on how he was faring. As I anticipated, he had quite a boost in business.
Also, I just wanted to bump the thread.

Knowing the current situation of our economy is very crucial. We have to be vigilant as to secure jobs. I hope for a very soon recovery from recession.
