A degree in web design is not worth much to employers, because the majority of good web designers are self-taught. A computer science degree, or a related degree in the computer field, is good, however, because you would have a backup of other useful skills.
The other reason, is that you aren't going to find an online school that offers a web-design degree, that also provides you with useful knowledge. All of the good online resources are free, and they don't offer degrees. Your potential employer will know this already, and won't think anything of a degree you present from an online institution. If you must get a degree in web design, go to a real institution. There, you will be presented with outdated information about web technologies, and will probably pay too much for what the knowledge is worth, though you may learn some graphic design skills.
On the other hand, you could try for a general design degree, that is not related to the web, but does involve computers. As a general rule, anything related to the web is not going to be very easy to obtain formal knowledge about, because the technology is moving very rapidly, and continues to evolve.
