But I agree, get a Mac. Not only can you go 24 hours non-stop, you can even go 24 months without one single rebuild, and it will still run fast like it was bought yesterday, unlike ALL Wintel boxes. I just finished rebuilding my desktop last week, with Core2 Quad and 2GB the machine still came to a grinding halt. ok not that bad, but might as well.
If you MUST stick to Wintel, then definitely Sony, but keep in mind the premium you will pay for the name. Acer's Eee netbook is surprisingly good, we have one, surprising for $400, but you know netbook, bare minimum with 10" screen, very portable but may not serve your purpose.
AVOID, I repeat, AVOID HP, especially if it runs on AMD. It makes people cry. Its stupid proprietary tools and fancy OS add-ons are annoying and bog down the system in no time.
I've had a Dell desktop and a laptop before, it's pretty good I think, stable and don't give you much headache.
