I had a friend that went to Mexico to get some dentle work done recently, almost 2 weeks later he got an upset stomach. He had none of the symtoms of "swine flu". At my job I was banned to walk through the doors till I got a Dr.s note stating that I did not have "swine flu". Keep in mind that it had been 2 weeks and I had absolutely NO symptoms of anything whatsoever. I had to go spend over $100 just for a piece of paper that said I was not sick at all. If any of you have ever had your nose swabbed then you know how upset I was.
What do you think about all of this? I would really like to know.

At least you proved that you are not sick. Your job mates are just concern in health issues as what the media reports. swine flu kills hundred of people am I right? So we must be very careful about our health.
Don't be upset mate. I'm sure you will do the same thing if you are at their situation. Please do understand their side.

My thing is that there is an incubation period of I think 5 days. The virus only survives at the most 1 day on hard surfaces. The media said that the yearly flu vaccine fights it because it's a form of influenza A. Why don't they worry this much about the "reg" flu when so many people die from that every year too. I'm not upset at the fact that I spent the money, I'm kind of upset that management wouldn't even listen to me. 1 of the main symptoms is a sore throat, believe me I wouldv'e been the first one out the door getting checked because I have a daughter, but I had nothing. Not 1 little twinge. I guess it's an epidemic.
I have this feeling that the media is part of the problem. I think they are hyping it up to be more than it is. If people would cough and sneeze in thier arm rather than thier hands we wouldn't spread as much stuff as what we do. Also hand sanitizer all the time no exceptions, but for some reason people don't listen to that when a doctor tells them to do that.
Thanks for the replies!

My heart goes out to you Steph, I certainly can understand your feelings. Perhaps the "magic" word here was Mexico, your friend went to Mexico and could be a carrier then pass flu onto you. As far as the swab nose, yikes, they showed last night how it's done, the swab goes into the nose very deeply, I think I felt it. From what I heard last night this flu started in Mexico during February with a little boy, they are pretty sure they have the source.
The real concern with this strain it has three different viruses and one of them is bird flu. As of last night our state has no cases, but the airport is being super monitored and taking precautions. As for the clinics anyone who has sore throat, fever, etc has to wear a mask before entering the building and they are ushered into a private room away from the general public. The staff members wear masks as well while seeing the patient.
I think my son and his room mate might have had this flu, perhaps not. About three weeks ago they both were very ill with the flu symptoms, son missed a week of work, just went back last week to work. In the meantime while still being sick the room mate went to the doctor for checkup being monitored for another medical problem, she asked the doctor about this flu. He said oh it's some crud going around, I certainly not faulting the doctor, how would the doctor know because at the time nobody knew anything. They live pretty close to the D.C. area.
I do feel the extra precaution is needed.

Giselle, believe me I was concerned when I heard about it, but someone at my job actually eves dropped on a conversation and went and told a manager that's why all this happened to me. They've closed schools down close to here. I don't know what to think anymore. I guess if people would have been doing what drs. have always said about the sneezing and washing hands thing then maybe it would stop spreading so much.

I think it is all hyped, but we cannot afford to take things like this seriously.
Imagine if we just blow something like this off & millions die.
It is surely something worth keeping an eye on. But I think that most of us will NOT get the swine flu

Oh dear, the eavesdropping trick, human nature in the raw, people will use what you divulge to them or eavesdropping against you. Perhaps the individual feels they are doing their duty or perhaps they are afraid of catching the flu and dying, nevertheless Steph I am sorry this happened to you, really I am.
I had an afterthought , I have been listening to the news on and off, what they are not mentioning to the public, there is enough medicine for everyone. What they are saying is, they are shipping in the medicine, they are producing the medicine as quickly as possible. How long does it take to produce the medicine? How much medicine would it take to cover everyone? I strongly feel that's why the US government, Medical people are trying to take very strong precautions, without causing too much of a panic.

APBT- yes it is serious, but like I said before, Thousands of people die every year from the flu. Most of this can be somewhat prevented by washing your hands and covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze. I just think it has been blown out of context. The media is going to cause panic. They aready have here in Texas.
Giselle- I honestly don't think that they will give up that info. I had a nurse practitioner tell me that there is no test for it or that there is no vaccine at all for it. Well somehow I got tested for it. There are so many differences of opinion on this one! People around here are going nuts! we are so close to Mexico. It's crazy you should see it!

Thanks that's interesting. I'm in a small town by San Antonio and they haven't had any reported cases. Ft Worth closed down 200 schools yesterday because 1 person is sick. This is crazy. Did you see the amount in Spain? They are saying on the news it came from Mexico how do they know?

2 confirmed cases of swine flu reported in Lowell, Massachusetts, which is a mere 15 minutes away from where I live.
And it originated in Mexico, as Mexico was receiving deaths even before anyone knew anything about it.

No, the yearly flu vaccine will NOT protect you. The vaccine people got for the yearly flu was NOT targeted at this strain of flu and, per the CDC, this strain is completely different. So, whatever media was reporting that is giving people terribly erroneous information!
THOUSANDS of people die of 'normal' flu every year. The very young and the old are the most likely to die from it. So far, there's only ONE death in the US, and that was a 23 month old MEXICAN child.
Get the facts, folks, and don't add to fear mongering - yes, we need to be much more careful, but it's not 1918 all over again!!!

6 cases confirmed in Washington state, one in our county and 1 school closed for 5 days, not sure where the school closure was. Unfortunately once a year we have a very big event held in Spokane called "Bloomsday" a running event held the first Sunday in May. Over 50,000 applicants have already signed up for this event, just massive crowds besides the applicants, right now the organization isn't sure how to handle it, to shut it down or proceed.
I don't know about your nurse practitioner information Steph, you had the test and I seen here how the test is done the other day with the nose swabbing, especially if you have flu like symptoms what the procedure is here. I don't know too much about the vaccine information, what I was referring to was pills, medicine for after the fact. Some of the severe sick cases in New York were treated with this medication and did just fine. Some of the other milder cases weren't issued the medicine, just rode it out and were fine too. I am sure it's crazy where you are at, being close to the border, but doesn't make any difference where you are at, what state you are in. Travel by plane is part of the problem, several people were interviewed at our airport the other day who were coming in from Mexico.
Personally I am taking this all very lightly, not the precautions though, after going through different epidemics such as Polio, Tuberculosis, different serious Flu strains, Aids, my attitude is another one to ride out. Our local news has done a fantastic job as far factual and informational.
Here's another link with a nice world map, scroll down the page to be able to see the map.

There may be a lttle too much media coverage.
At the grocery today people were ignorning the pork chops which they were almost giving away but the fools were buying the California and Texas produce. The are far more likely to get sick from the produce than they are the pork.
I am having chops for dinner with no salad.
