How wrong could Yahoo have been about the future of the web with the idea of Geocities?

Still, brings back some beautiful memories of my early webpages, along with all those lovely animated gifs that we all loved so much. Web pages back then were fun. Ugly, pointless and horrible to use, but fun.

XKCD is commemorating the demise of Geocities in the best way possible!

In a way I will miss all those "home made" Geocities sites.

To a large extent they were a huge part of the early days of the web, giving anyone an opportunity to say something - quite revolutionary for the time. Of course we all mock those crazy animated gifs, but I dare say many of todays top web developers may have dipped their toe into the water with Geocities, but gone on to much better things.

Remember once upon a time how every web search would pull up at least one Geocities site of some flavour? Some sites weren't interesting but others would be amazingly useful or entertaining.

Go Geocities I bid you farewell - you will be gone, but not forgotten

Hmmm, so that was the reason why...

I told to myself this morning, when I checked the new comic: "well, that's an odd background", but I even had not read the text surrounding the comic

+30 for subliminal ads blinding

I'll be honest, I'm not shedding any tears over it but Geocities was certainly a landmark in the progression of the web, and it was useful and fun at times. I started a web page on it many years ago but gave up after I discovered GoLive. I wonder how differently my career would've panned out if I'd have stuck with Geocities? Louder, more animated and certainly more garish I shouldn't wonder!

Rest in Peace Geocities.

Very sad indeed, yes it was fun and all those animations, although I didn't have an account with them. It was a nice opportunity for people to make their personal home pages, small business people were using them also. No Geocities won't be forgotten.....
