Not a physics major, but I've programmed enough laser displays to know you can't
The human eye can only see "light" in two forms, by looking directly at the source (try it with a small torch NOT the sun or a laser pen ). Or by seeing the reflected light from a target object.
For humans beings, light must be reflected off some kind of screen. Water molecules in the air (steam, clouds), dust particles (the "sparklies" you see in a beam of light) or smoke particles. Try having a laser show in a club/discotheque without a smoke machine.
Try it for yourself.
Get a laser pointer and shine it across a room you will only see the point where the beam refracts from the lens and the point where it "hits" objects (and it will drive the cat mad ).
Now blow smoke, puff some talcum powder or steam from a kettle across the beam and the beam will be visible as it reflects of the particles.
So the Jetsons "touch screen", Star Trek holodecks, Star Wars light sabres etc are not really possible (yet )
