Maybe not;

What we accept as the best work of so many artists and musicians were done while "under the influence" of "substances"

Alcohol relaxes inhibitions because of it's effects on brain chemistry, most people will exhibit more bravado and take more risks after a "couple of drinks", and it is the same with artistic flair.
The "relaxing effect" gives the person more confidence in their artistic abilities.

They don't actually need the alcohol, which can (and will) destroy them in time, they just need to learn HOW to create the relaxing effect WITHOUT the substance.

I can see how that could make sense. I've read that the scientist who discovered DNA as a double helix was under the influence of LSD. Maybe that has something to do with creativity again.

It's human to make mistakes, and unfortunately we can't change the situation if something bad happened, but we may remember that so that not to make such mistakes in the future
