I suppose they could ( possibly do it ) as they may be broadcasting some kind of - or + ions.

However its VERY unlikely to actually cause a bolt to hit it.

For a lightning strike you need a streamer ( a bit of lightning to reach from the ground upwards )
You wont get this from a cellphone in your pocket or hand as your body just holds too much resistance.

It was more than likely just the fact that he was the tallest bit around and being unlucky.

Ok then;

sooooo;

he is stood out in the open, being the tallest earthed object for several hundred yards around but "obviously" it was the mobile phone that gave the spark it's return path.

Anybody need a physics lesson??? other than the half-wit in the video of course!

Here's a little known fact, people over 185cm tall or 6 foot 1 are 58 times more likely to be hit and killed by lightening than people under 4 foot 8.
Personally I think the odds are lot higher.

As noted twice above.

The fact he was tall was probably the factor here.
Not the phone.

So, if we extrapolate that,

I am not a tall person but I certainly wouldn't be standing outside during an electrical storm talking on a cell phone, nor do I use a cell phone at a gas station.

If you are in the city among the highest building, you shouldn't worry so much, the lightening is not going to strike you.

if this was true then surely the amount of people being hit by lighting would have increased significantly since the 80's/90's.

i dont know anyone who has ever been hit by lighting...and i know at least 3 people

OMG!, looks like he's been hit by lightning, but I have a friend whose brother's been hit by lightning and he's DOA in the hospital. Just stay away from lightning prone area .
