It's all a bit comical really, one one hand we have the "Earth hour" with a token gesture of turning the lights of for 60 mins and on the other there would be FAR more energy savings by turning computers that are not actually required, off during the night.
I monitored the power wasted by leaving machines, monitor PSUs, etc on overnight and at weekends when not in use.
Turning them off cut the consumption by almost a third, plus cost savings about ~£4 per week and that's just with one desktop and one laptop.
