You're all spoilt. Dare to witness the cost of living in Australia!
gallon of gas/petrol: $5.10 (1.35 litre)
gallon of milk: $5.70 (1.50 - 2.00 per litre)
loaf of bread: $2.50 generic, $3-$5 for branded
dozen eggs: $4.00 to $6.00
pound of chicken: $5.45 for thighs - skin on
pound of beef: $6.00 to $30.00, depends on the cut.
The average 3 bedroom home with kitchen/dining/lounge perhaps a car port if you're lucky, in the inner suburbs of metro cities:-
rent: $450 - $800 per week
buy: $500K to $900K
My average electricity bill is $400 for 3 months (family of 4).
All cars require annual registration, my 6cyl 3.0L Mitsubishi Magna costs $788.00 per year for registration.
Minimum wage in Australia is approx $525.00 per week. However income tax is steep:-
$6,001 – $35,000: 15c for each $1 over $6,000
$35,001 – $80,000: $4,350 plus 30c for each $1 over $35,000
$80,001 – $180,000: $17,850 plus 38c for each $1 over $80,000
$180,001 and over: $55,850 plus 45c for each $1 over $180,000
Here's the kicker. Australian parents can expect to outlay 1.2 million in child care/education expenses per child until the child leaves home (providing the child goes to public schools and leaves home at 19).
Why so expensive? Social benefits, free public health system, aged/disability/sole parent pensions, and infrastructure for a continent just as big as USA - but with only 27 million population.
